Although VirtualDub is not as powerful and flexible as other video editing programs, like Adobe Premiere, the software can still satisfy your needs when it comes to cutting or adjusting videos. The software makes such operations straightforward and easy. What's more, VirtualDub provides support for batch operations and its functionality can be extended through third party filters.

The program is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that it is free. Furthermore, VirtualDub doesn't need to be installed. All you have to do is download an archive, extract its contents and run an executable. The software's hardware requirements are modest and it can be used on numerous Windows versions, from Win 98 to Win 7.

In terms of appearance, VirtualDub is much simpler than a traditional video editor. Its main user interface resembles a video player, rather than an editor, though it comes with a decent amount of controls. Once you load a video, you can play it normally, forwards or in reverse, jump from frame to frame and so on. You can also find controls for marking a start and an end position on the video's timeline, to select a certain segment.

VirtualDub's core editing features can be accessed through a series of top menus. Finding a specific function is quite easy, because everything is very well organized. Options for video or audio manipulations or miscellaneous tools are categorized in separate menus.

The software allows you to make a wide range of adjustments. You can apply and tweak numerous filters, change the frame rate, color depth, compression and manipulate other characteristics. The original video and the edited one are displayed side by side, in the same playback area, so you can see the effects of your settings right away. The edited video can be exported in various formats, including RAW video or audio, as an image sequence and even as an Adobe Filmstrip file.

Pros

The software provides a decent amount of editing tools. The user friendly interface makes the program easy to master. Also, VirtualDub is free, lightweight and it doesn't need to be installed.

Cons

There are no serious issues to mention. If you are looking for a quick and simple solution for adjusting your videos, then you will definitely be interested in VirtualDub.
